With more than 25 years of experience in the legal field as a commercial litigator, the Abbotsford case is by no means David’s last pro bono commitment, and he now includes pro bono work in his group’s business plan. As a result of the ruling, other jurisdictions have reviewed their policies on dealing with homelessness issues. ![]() The trial helped to put a human face on homelessness, as many of the “campers” told stories of their personal journeys. This meant looking beyond my four walls and connecting with the community and organizations to help those who can’t afford legal services.”ĭavid argued that evicting people with nowhere to go, many with mental health challenges, would violate Section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which ensures the right to life, liberty, and security of person. “I wanted an opportunity where I could apply my litigation skills in other meaningful ways. “I was looking for a different challenge,” explains David. In a “half-day” effort that turned into a six-week trial, David succeeded in advancing the Charter rights of homeless people. In 2013, he took on a pro bono case, representing homeless people who had set up an encampment on city-owned land in Abbotsford, 60 kilometers east of Vancouver.
